West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing, the “Official State dance of California”, is a contemporary swing dance which embodies the relaxed, laidback culture of the West Coast. The dance is characterized by its distinctive elastic feel and is unlike most other partner dances, as it favours improvisation from both partners and places a greater emphasis on follower-initiated interpretation of the music. The dance involves smooth, rolling footwork, and is very groovy and sexy in an understated fashion.
West Coast Swing owes much of its popularity to its incredible versatility, as it can technically be danced to any four-count beat. While originally danced to mid-tempo blues, West Coast Swing dancers today are spoilt for choice, and have taken to the dancefloor with tunes from the most current pop, country, rock, hip hop and R&B artists. This is a dance form that is truly in a state of constant evolution, always growing and changing with the music of the times.
